On Friday, May 31st, over 300 students rallied together to raise $20, 000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The students spent the past several months creating teams, spreading awareness and fundraising for a cause that has affected so many in our community, including some of our own students.
Relay For Life MC’s, Marissa Clarke and Sabrina Malouka, kicked off the day by welcoming one of our very own cancer survivors, Sahar Fermani to share her story, followed by a Survivor Lap around the track.
Relay For Life is a day-long event in which teams participate by walking (or running!) around the track. Each team must have at least one person walking at all times and laps are recorded by designated counters. Students celebrated the laps with special themes, including Toronto Sports Teams, Carter Spirit Wear, Hawaiian, Disney/Superhero and Country.
Highlights also included a blow-up obstacle course, performances by students bands, a zumba dance party and a dunk tank, all of which kept smiles on and energy high throughout the day. The celebration concluded with a luminary display in the gym to celebrate and honour those who are affected by cancer.
The Committee’s promotional slogan this year was “Cancer Changes Everything. So Can You.” The students’ contributions will most certainly be far-reaching, but even more, their desire to help others is contagious. We can’t wait to see how the spirit built through Relay For Life will echo through the halls of our school.
Congratulations to the Relay For Life Committee for a successful event and a huge thank you to all who participated. Special shout-outs to our special guests, performers, the tech team, our custodians and teachers Ms. Akleh, Ms. Collins, Ms. Dametto and Ms. Imgrund.
