The Celtics finished the regular season with a 4-1-1 record, sitting third in the division, a semifinal date with St. Maximilian Kolbe looming. After defeating St. Maximillian Kolbe by a score of 1-0, the ladies played St. Brother Andre in the YRAA Tier 1 soccer finals on May 29th, 2019 at Concord Park. The Celtics won their last meeting with Brother Andre during the regular season 5-0. The league final played out much differently.
The Celtics led 1-0 at halftime off of a goal from Grade 9 student Subara Hawil. As the second half started, the Celtics seemed to lose momentum and Brother Andre scored to tie the game at 1-1 with about 20 minutes remaining. The opposition’s defense was formidable, frustrating the Celtic’s midfield and forwards. However, the Celtics offense came in waves, eventually breaking through the defense, and scoring two more times in the last five minutes of the second half; Subara Hawil scoring both the second and third goals, completing the hat-trick.
This group has shown great development over the season not just as athletes, but as holistic, Catholic learners. They showed great faith, teamwork, courage, perseverance, and respect for themselves, their teammates, their coaches, and their opponents all season long. They brought different levels of skill with them to the team, but encouraged each other and picked each other up when they were struggling. They celebrated their accolades, and learned from their mistakes. We are proud of these ladies for their great accomplishments! Well done junior lady Celtics!
